Although I haven't looked at the Informational Writing component for the types of assessments it calls for, I believe I will use Beth's digital essay assessment in place of what I currently do with 10th grade students writing a nonfiction piece about an area in which they are an expert. This means I'll be doing the Informational Reading and Informational Essay units during my first trimester rather than during the recommended middle of the year progression.

In the Informational Reading lessons, I plan to follow the unit but with an emphasis on the present day controversy over the Confederate Flag as my whole class demonstrations. This means I have to be on the look-out for articles/videos/photos. I'm using the technology piece I found from attending the Using Technology in Reading and Writing workshop. From what I understand paper.li will aggregate articles for me over time related to key words I set up on my page.I'll also search the resources provided in the unit and from Beth and Amy's wiki for student resources related to civil disobedience/protest in the 1960s. This will be the bridge I use to move onto my Narrative Unit using The Crucible as Arthur Miller's means of protesting against McCarthyism and further connecting it to John Proctor's ultimate example of civil disobedience/protest in going to his death rather than lying about his involvement with witchcraft.

Elizabeth,
The real usable stuff: First, I will be using your paragraph model sheet before session five in the 12 th grade informational writing unit. I feel like this exercise will improve the final product. Second, I will use close reading guideposts to deepen understanding for my AP class in composition. As they read essays they will get more from these pieces with your help! Thanks again for all your work!
